Bom Jesus do Monte. Mountain and hill tops have always had an important role in Europe. They built cities on several hills, gym smithfield as Lisbon is built on seven hills, castles, churches and pilgrimage. Around the chapels are four Baroque fountains constructed with images of the evangelists. The entire fine work is attributed to the famous Braga archtect Andre Soares.
Around 1871 Archbishop Gaspar de Bragança decided to make the addition of a third segmant of stairs and a newer church. Complete the The third stage also follows the zig-zag pattern and is dedicated to the "three theological virtues: wakes, gym smithfield Hope and Love. again each with its own fountain. A newer church was built in the neoclassical design by architect Carlos Amarante. Construction began in 1784 and after decorating the interior in the early 19th century, the church was consecrated in 1834. This church was one of the first neoclassical churches of Portugal.
